The Command to Love Yourself

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)

Did you catch the command to love yourself?  It's easy to miss a key message in this scripture.  However, it's important to pause and reflect on the portion of the scripture that says, "Love your neighbor as yourself".

For years, I thought that this was the order:

Love God

Love Others

Love Yourself

However, the correct order is:

Love God

Love Yourself

Love Others

In the second greatest commandment, God commands us to love ourselves.  This is because if we understand God's love for us, we can better love ourselves.  We are called to practice self-love God's way.
